An AI SEO checker is a tool that scores a page on two things at once: whether search engines can crawl and understand it, and whether AI answer engines can retrieve and quote it. Those are different questions with different failure modes, and a checker that reports only one of them is telling you half the story.

The distinction matters because the two now diverge in practice. A page can be technically flawless by conventional SEO standards — clean titles, fast, indexed, well linked — and be structurally impossible for an assistant to cite, because nothing on it is extractable and the brand behind it resolves to nothing.

What an AI SEO checker should actually check

Half the checks in this category are inherited from conventional SEO tooling and are worth keeping. The other half did not exist five years ago and are where most of the difference now sits.

The conventional half establishes that the page is reachable and comprehensible: indexability, canonical correctness, title and heading structure, internal links, page weight and HTTPS. Nothing here is new, and a failure in this half usually blocks everything else.

The AI half establishes that the page is quotable and the brand is known. That means crawler access for the AI user agents specifically, server-side rendering, valid JSON-LD of the high-yield types, direct-answer openings under each heading, real lists and tables rather than prose descriptions of them, stated authorship and dates, and finally whether the brand exists as a resolvable entity in public records.

  • Indexability — no accidental noindex, correct canonical, reachable from your own links.
  • AI crawler access — GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended checked individually, not as a group.
  • Rendering — is the body copy in the HTML, or painted later by JavaScript that most AI crawlers never run.
  • Structured data — valid JSON-LD, and whether the types are the useful ones rather than a generic WebPage block.
  • Extractability — direct answers under headings, real tables, real lists, enough content to chunk.
  • Provenance — a named author and machine-readable dates, the two trust signals an engine can verify.
  • Entity authority — whether the brand resolves in Wikipedia and Wikidata, and whether its sameAs graph is consistent.

How to read the score you get back

A single number is a summary, not a diagnosis, and the useful information is in which half is weak. Two pages scoring 60 can need completely opposite work.

If SEO health is strong and AI readiness is weak, the page is fine for search and unquotable for assistants. The fixes are formatting and schema, they are cheap, and they ship in an afternoon. If AI readiness is strong and entity authority is weak, the page is well built and the brand is invisible — no amount of further page work will fix that, because recommendation questions are answered with names rather than URLs.

The case worth acting on immediately is a critical cap. Some faults are not deductions but ceilings: a page an engine cannot index, a page served without HTTPS, or a page with too little content to rank. Those cap the score outright, because no amount of good markup compensates for a page that cannot be reached or has nothing on it.

What no AI SEO checker can tell you

Be sceptical of any tool in this category that reports how often ChatGPT or Perplexity cite you, derived from a scan of your page. That number cannot come from your HTML. Citation behaviour varies per model, per prompt and per week, and establishing it requires querying models repeatedly at real cost.

What a scan can honestly establish is readiness: whether you have made yourself citable. That is a genuinely useful thing to know, it is deterministic, and it is entirely within your control — which is more than can be said for the number the category likes to advertise.

Does it work on any website?
Any publicly reachable URL. Pages behind a login, on a private network or blocked to our user agent cannot be fetched, and the report says so rather than guessing. Sites that render entirely in the browser are flagged as such, because that is itself the finding.
How long does a scan take?
Roughly fifteen seconds. The page is fetched once, parsed once, and the entity lookups run concurrently against the public Wikipedia and Wikidata APIs. There is no queue and no crawl of your wider site unless you ask for one.
